Duration: 3 Months
This phase of the project is for gathering enough information
to successfully execute phases two and three. The information
gathered in the first phase will be used to successfully plan
and execute the rest of the project. The listing below is not
necessarily chronological as several of the listed activities
can be executed concurrently.
1.1 - Gather available information about similar
projects and studies carried out by the government and NGOs.
The idea here is to leverage any existing information to
reduce the amount of work necessary to successfully complete the
research.
1.2 - Identify the educational necessities
of the community through surveys and
focus groups of the students, teachers, and family members.
1.3 -
Analyze current economic resources (state government
funding, local funding, etc.), didactic material, and available
infrastructure (schools, physical education facilities, etc.).
1.4 - Evaluate the capacity of the current teaching
staff.
1.5 - Evaluate the level of knowledge of the students
through the use of standard exams and other analysis tools.
Duration: 2 Years
This phase of the project is concerned with getting the
teachers trained on using the Internet. To successfully train
the teachers, a training center center that is wired to the
Internet will first be built and then the teachers will be
capacitated with new skills that they can pass on to the rest of
the community.
2.1 - Implement a
telecenter in Quingue.
This phase comprises setting up the physical space for the
training center. This will include getting computers and
networks set up along with establishing use guidelines with the
local community.
2.2 - Develop and implement a program for computer /
Internet training for the teachers.
The training will be focused on how to use the Internet to
enhance current teaching materials and methods for the current
curricula in the schools.
2.3 - Create a teachers association
The teachers association will have several responsibilities.
such as, managing and administering programs in the telecenter,
managing and administering current education programs, etc.
2.4 - Establish programs for training the general public
on how to use the Internet.
The teachers will run workshops and pass the knowledge they
have received on to their community. This will help to generate
and foster respect and goodwill towards the teachers of the
communities. Increasing the value of the role and influence of
the local teachers.
2.5 - Create a revenue stream for supporting the
telecenter.
A potential would be to charge a very minimal cost for
Internet usage to the general public. Similar to the model used in several Internet
Cafes in Ecuador. The drive would not be profit but just enough
to keep the center running without monetary donations.
2.6 - Create a team from the
teachers association that will run and administer the telecenter.
The team would likely be
volunteers from the schools or some of the teachers. A community
volunteer program may work as well. It would be best to involve
the community in the support of the center to create a sense of
ownership of the center. This dynamic will serve to keep the
center operational into the future.
